China

We're not in Kansas anymore, Toto

What's a girl to do?
Well we finally arrived in China.  After all that traveling, all I wanted to do was go take a shower at the hotel.  But being with a tour group doesn’t give you the luxury of doing what you want when you want though.  Our first stop was for lunch at this restaurant that served Chinese food (what else!) family style.  They started out with different bean sprouts, soup, rice and multiple meat/vegetable dishes.  All the food is put on a lazy Susan and you spin it around to get to try all the food.  Some was good, some not so good.  It’s difficult to tell what types of meat are in the dishes but I did try tempura battered lotus root, which was interesting- kind of tasted like watercress.  This restaurant is also where I encountered my fist squat toilet. All I can say is how do Chinese people not injure themselves more often- very interesting experience!

Next we went to Yuyoun Garden- I believe this is the only garden in Shanghai.  I’m a bit tired so it’s a little difficult to listen to the tour guide.  I’m just snapping pics of things that look cool.

We finally went to check in at the hotel.  The program is actually pretty cool so far.  Sally, the woman in charge is so organized and has so much planned for us to do during our traveling days.  She is so sweet too. The group I’m with is about 30 teachers ranging in ages.  There are some married couples who came together, some girls who just finished their first year of teaching and everything in between.  There is actually a big group of teachers from Alaska who all came together.  Everyone is so nice.  My roommate’s name is Erin.  She is from California.  She had a camera cord that I could use to upload my pics!!  I couldn’t believe I forgot that so thank God for small miracles!

After resting a bit we met back up for dinner and a night cruise on the Huangpu River.  The city is beautiful all lit up.
